About the project

ASOSAI Regional Audit Observatory

The ASOSAI Regional Audit Observatory project is an open digital resource that consolidates information on national regional and municipal audit systems across ASOSAI member countries and makes it available for search and analysis in a user‑friendly format on this website. The site provides concise descriptions of different regional audit models, their strengths and weaknesses, leading practices, methodological approaches and analytical overviews based on comparative data from all countries in the region.

Supreme Audit Institutions, regional audit bodies and experts can explore materials on the site, submit updates on national practices and request additional information from the Secretariat and peers, keeping the database current. The project serves as a platform for professional dialogue and knowledge sharing, supports capacity development in regional audit and functions as an analytical tool for enhancing transparency and the quality of public governance at the subnational level.

Strengthening Local Public Audit Through Cooperation

Recent crises have highlighted the need for strong public resource management and objective assessment at all levels, including regional and municipal. Strengthening local audit reinforces financial discipline, supports key social and economic goals, and advances national programs.

To improve the performance and professional capacity of local audit bodies, cooperation and knowledge-sharing are essential. Supreme Audit Institutions play an increasing role by setting quality standards, promoting INTOSAI pronouncements, and supporting capacity-building for Regional Audit Institutions.

Because regional and municipal audit mandates and contexts differ widely, comparing national practices helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and shared challenges. To deepen understanding and foster professional development across levels, we propose establishing the ASOSAI Regional Audit Observatory.
